“Dune and Orientalism” is a visual companion to Haifa Mahabir’s article, “Frank Herbert’s Dune and Orientalism,” which delves into the intricate parallels between the Dune universe and the historical realities of colonization.

While the color palette and textures evoke the cinematic feeling of the Dune films, the book gradually unravels—through its shifting textures, layered compositions, and visual dissonance—to mirror the imbalance of power between the colonizers and the colonized. The interplay between design elements becomes a silent narrative of resistance and domination.

“Dune and Orientalism” is not just a book for Dune fans, but instead hopes to offer a deeper understanding of how science fiction can mirror historical and contemporary realities, shedding light on the nuanced power struggles and exploitation that often accompany colonialism.

Final deliverable:  24 page book in a drum leaf binding with a 8in x 6in page size.
