Hip Hop Album Covers as Visual Protest

Poster & Motion Graphic

Fall 2024
Typography II
InDesign, Photoshop, After Effects

This collection poster is meant to highlight an alternative design history, one that may not be as well-known as it should be. The collection of these album covers discuss how they are used as a powerful medium by black artists to amplify their voices and challenge issues of racial injustice. The poster deciphers the meaning behind many iconic album covers and gives some information on its place in history.

Situated in an era-defining moment of music, this poster is organized in chronological order with album covers that are both directly and indirectly visually protesting. The gritty backdrop, bold typography, and the almost rhythmic movement of the elements is reminiscent of both the era and hip hop as a fundamental aspect of black history.

The motion graphic is meant to be a short teaser to the poster—giving the viewer an idea of some of the core design and thematic entries while giving some more life to the entire concept.

Volume highly reccomended for the motion graphic :)

Final deliverable:A1 Poster accompanied with a 30 second motion graphic
