The Lazy River

Poster & Booklet Set

These three booklet and poster sets reimagine Zadie Smith’s short story, “The Lazy River” a narrative centered on a real-world river in Spain that serves as a profound metaphor for modern existence. The river becomes a cyclical symbol of inertia, illustrating how people are carried passively by external forces, often surrendering to superficial pleasures in place of purposeful action.

Each set—both poster and booklet—delves into one of the story’s central themes: privilege, artificialality, and the futility of resistance. Bound together by the overarching metaphor of the infinite river and the relentless passage of time, these sets invite the viewer to reflect on their own place within these currents.

The posters fold into their corresponding booklets, which offer a more introspective exploration of each theme that compliments their poster.

Final deliverable:  Three 11in x 17in posters that fold into 8-page booklets.
